The HMU library was established in 1949. Through the efforts of generations of the librarians, at present it has become a biomedical library with its own characteristic resources construction system and a complete setup of modern facilities. In 1996, it emerged with Heilongjiang Medical Information Institute, and set up Heilongjiang Information Center of Medical Literature. It took the lead in achieving the integration of library and information among the medical library and information institutions in China. In 1999 the library got an entire refurbishment, which has substantially improved the environment for librarians and readers. The library is a member of the Medical Information Academy of China Medical Association, a member of the Library Society of the China Higher Medical Institutions, a consultation unit for medical projects of the Ministry of Health, and a first-class station of the CNKI network service.
 
HMU library includes one main library, five branch libraries and three data departments, with a total space of 8800 square meters and 820 thousand books and journals. The main library has a space of 6000 square meters at present, with 3 periodical reading rooms, 1 electronic reading room and 450 seats in total. The new modern library is under construction, which will be used next year with 2000 seats for general readers and 300 for electronic readers and a total space of 26100 square meters. Biomedical literature is the main part of the resources of the library, supplemented with books and journals of humanities and social sciences and various language reference books.
